The Swedish Quality Register for Otosclerosis Surgery
The Swedish Quality Register for Otosclerosis Surgery (SQOS), established in 2004, is one of nine officially authorized national registers for ear, nose, and throat diseases. The register is independent of the National Board of Health and Welfare, to which the numbers of surgical procedures performed are mandatory reported.
Surgical data and hearing outcome are systematically collected from ENT-clinics performing stapes surgery, with the aim to develop and guarantee the quality of treatment. The data can be reviewed but also compared between clinics. 350-400 stapes surgeries are performed annually at about 20 clinics.
The register went through a major reconstruction and the rebuilt register was launched in 2013. Data are collected in three forms:
- A baseline form including preoperative hearing, surgical method and perioperative complications
- A follow-up form including postoperative hearing and unwanted symptoms
- Patient related outcome measurement (PROM) with questions including hearing improvement and complications
The register is administrated by a reference group on behalf of the Swedish Association for Otorhinolaryngology Head- and Neck Surgery and financed by the Swedish government and the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions.
The register contains information on several factors related to otosclerosis surgery that may influence the outcome of the operation. Longitudinal results at national and unit level as well as PROM-data are presented openly (in Swedish).

Coverage
Since the register restarted in 2013, coverage at the national level has improved. For the entire period 2013-2021, the coverage was 90% and and 92% for the year 2021.
Completeness
The register has a high degree of completeness with follow-up registrations in 91% and PROMs registrations in 67% for the period 2013-2020.
